It starts small. The kitchen sink takes a few extra seconds to empty after washing dishes. Then you notice a smell near the drain, something sour and greasy that does not go away with bleach. A week later, water pools on the kitchen floor because the drain cannot handle the volume. By this point, your grease trap is well past full, and the problem is heading toward your plumbing lines.
A grease trap is a simple containment device installed between your kitchen drain and the sewer line. Water flows through it slowly enough for fats, oils, and grease (FOG) to float to the surface and solids to settle to the bottom. Relatively clean water passes through to the sewer. The trap holds the grease until it is manually removed. If the trap is not cleaned regularly, the grease layer thickens until it blocks the outlet, and all your kitchen wastewater has nowhere to go.
